ABOUT ME
About Dr. Melissa Kae, Licensed Psychologist in California
Hello! I’m Dr. Melissa Kae (she/her), a licensed psychologist and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. I’m the owner and founder of Forge The Key Therapy, where I provide compassionate, affirming online therapy throughout California. My goal is to offer a safe, inclusive space where clients of all identities and backgrounds feel seen, supported, and empowered to heal.
LGBTQ+ Affirming, Trauma-Informed, and Personalized Care
I believe therapy should be tailored to you. I take a collaborative, strength-based approach that honors your unique personality, values, and life experiences. My work is grounded in evidence-based methods such as:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
Cognitive and mindfulness-based techniques
Trauma-informed care and nervous system support
Together, we’ll explore what’s causing distress — whether it’s painful thoughts, overwhelming emotions, past trauma, or identity struggles — and build the insight and tools needed to move forward. My work often focuses on:
Managing anxiety, depression, and perfectionism
Healing from family dysfunction or trauma
Supporting LGBTQIA+ identity development and self-acceptance
Strengthening emotional regulation and interpersonal relationships
Living a values-driven life with more clarity and intention
Clinical Background
I have extensive experience working with adults, older adults, adolescents, veterans, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as individuals navigating complex life transitions and systemic challenges. My clinical training spans:
Inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings
Residential treatment programs
Skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities
Working with justice-involved individuals and those experiencing homelessness
These experiences inform my deeply trauma-aware and socially conscious approach, especially when supporting clients from marginalized and underserved communities.
A Bit About Me
Outside of the therapy room, I’m a cisgender woman (she/her) who enjoys sports, travel, woodworking, and spending time with my sweet dog Rooster — a “career changed” guide dog with a heart of gold. I love connecting with people who embrace curiosity, humor, and a genuine passion for growth and self-exploration.
I am a member of the San Diego Psychological Association, Psychology Today, EMDR International Association ,Association of Jewish Psychologists,
and Pro- Choice Therapists.
